NYC move-out cleaning checklist: rooms, access and final handover
The most useful move-out checklist combines the rooms to clean with the practical details that make those rooms accessible. Packing, movers, building rules and the final walkthrough all affect the plan. Use this guide to prepare a clear request, assign tasks and leave time to review the agreed work before returning access.
The short answer
Arrange cleaning after movers have cleared the agreed areas and before the handover. List rooms, surfaces and requested interiors explicitly; confirm water, power, entry and the review deadline. Cleaning does not guarantee a deposit outcome or repair damaged finishes.
At a glance
| Area | List in your brief | Check beforehand |
|---|---|---|
| Kitchen | Counters, sink, stovetop, exteriors, floors | Interiors requested separately; belongings removed |
| Bathroom | Fixtures, mirror, shower/tub, floor | Personal items cleared; marks described |
| Bedrooms / living space | Accessible surfaces and floors | Movers finished; no heavy lifting assumed |
| Closets / interior windows | Name the specific additional tasks | Access and inclusion confirmed |
| Building / handover | Entry time, contact and review deadline | Water, power and building approval arranged |
Start with the handover requirements
Ask the property contact for the cleaning expectations and any supplied checklist. Separate cleaning requests from repairs, painting, bulky item removal and maintenance. Record concerns that were already present so they are not mistaken for a cleaning task. Give the cleaner the actual scope and deadline rather than asking only for an inspection-ready apartment. Your property contact, not the cleaning company, determines acceptance of the handover.
Kitchen: make interiors an explicit decision
List counters, sink, stovetop, appliance exteriors and floors. If you need oven, refrigerator or cabinet interiors, request each one and confirm it in the quote. State whether food, cookware and shelf contents will be removed before arrival. Do not assume the team will empty storage, discard possessions, disconnect appliances or move heavy equipment. Give surface-care instructions and identify any damaged or delicate finishes.
Bathroom: separate buildup from damaged finishes
Describe the toilet, tub or shower, sink, mirrors and floor work you need. Empty personal belongings from agreed areas and mention stubborn marks before booking. A cleaner needs to know whether the concern is removable buildup or a finish that may need specialist attention. Do not assume that grout repair, restoration or a promise to remove every mark is included in an apartment cleaning visit.
Living areas, bedrooms and storage
Arrange for boxes and furniture to be removed from the areas in scope. List accessible surfaces, floors, closet shelves, baseboards or interior window areas you want reviewed rather than treating them all as automatic inclusions. Identify items that remain and anything that must not be touched. Heavy lifting, repairs and exterior window work require separate arrangements; they should not appear as unspoken expectations on cleaning day.
Coordinate the building, movers and cleaning window
For a Greenwich Village walk-up, describe stairs and the floor. For an elevator building in Manhattan, DUMBO, Brooklyn Heights, Williamsburg or Jersey City, ask management about entry registration and service-elevator use where relevant. Confirm required documents, access hours and who will admit the team. Give both the expected mover finish time and the actual handover deadline; they are separate milestones. Requirements vary by building.
Review before returning access
Leave time for a walkthrough of the agreed tasks with your designated contact. Check that requested interiors were accessible and that agreed surfaces and floors have been addressed. Keep a record of unresolved items and ask about them while access is still available. Photos may help document condition if permitted, but do not capture neighbors or private information. Any deposit decision is separate from the cleaner’s agreed scope.
Common questions
How much does move-out cleaning cost?
JPN provides a custom quote for move-in and move-out work. Send the apartment size, bathrooms, condition, interior tasks, access details and deadline. Standard-maintenance starting prices do not determine a move-out total.
Should I book before or after the movers?
Plan the cleaning after the agreed areas are cleared, with enough time before handover to review the work. If movers and cleaners must overlap, discuss the room-release sequence before booking.
Does an empty apartment mean every cabinet and appliance is included?
No. An empty home makes access easier, but requested interiors still need to be in the agreed task list.
Do you guarantee my deposit will be returned?
No. Cleaning covers the agreed work; it cannot guarantee a property decision or resolve repairs and other unrelated issues.

Please confirm availability, tasks, exclusions and total.
Adapt these planning fields before requesting a quote. Keep entry codes and other sensitive access details out of public documents.
