Move-out and move-in in New York: what to know before booking cleaning

Coordinate cleaning at your old and new NYC apartments with movers, keys, building access, appliance interiors and two separate handover deadlines.

Treat the move as two separate cleaning jobs

Cleaning the home you are leaving and preparing the home you are entering have different purposes. The first follows the agreed handover requirements; the second prepares the accessible space before you settle in. Give each address its own scope, condition description and time window. A single moving day does not mean one appointment can cover both homes or that a provider has availability for both. Confirm the work separately before building it into your move schedule.

Put keys, movers and access in the right order

For the old apartment, establish when belongings will actually be removed and when you must return the keys. For the new apartment, confirm when you receive authorized entry and when deliveries begin. Check the building's arrangements for visitors, service access and any elevator bookings directly with management. Cleaning scheduled before the movers finish may be disrupted; cleaning booked before keys are available may not start at all. Share one reachable contact for each address.

Describe what will remain in each home

An empty apartment, a furnished rental and a home full of packed boxes are different jobs. Specify furniture, stored items and rooms that will remain occupied. List appliance and cabinet interiors separately and confirm who will empty them. Repairs, painting, heavy lifting, disposal of possessions and restoration should not be assumed to be included. If contractors will still be working, tell the cleaner before requesting a completion time.

Keep cleaning separate from property condition

Document the condition according to your own handover arrangements and distinguish existing damage from tasks that can be cleaned. A cleaning service cannot promise a deposit return or decide whether a landlord's charge is valid. If an area needs repair or specialist assessment, arrange that separately. For the new apartment, identify unfamiliar finishes and provide care instructions where available. Do not expect a cleaning visit to confirm that every appliance or building system is functioning correctly.

Plan a fallback before moving day

Discuss what happens if movers run late, access changes or the new apartment is not ready. Ask the provider about its actual rescheduling and access terms rather than assuming unlimited flexibility. Keep cleaning, transport and delivery contacts separate so each can respond to the part it controls. A practical plan may require different dates for the two homes. Avoid promising a same-day turnaround to a landlord or incoming resident until the necessary appointments are confirmed.

Request two clear proposals

Send JPN the address, size, bathroom count, condition and requested work for each apartment, plus the moving and key-handover times. Ask for separate confirmation of availability, included tasks, price and any applicable taxes or fees. Use a room list to review each completed visit before the relevant handover. For detailed room-by-room preparation, read the move-out checklist alongside this coordination guide. The aim is a workable sequence, with clear responsibilities at both ends of the move.
